Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is one of Tanzania’s largest national parks, spanning 30,893 square kilometers. Renowned for its significant elephant population, this park is named after Sir Frederick Selous, a famous big game hunter and early conservationist who died here in 1917 fighting against the Germans.
Nyerere National Park offers diverse activities, including bushman walks, boat safaris on the Rufiji River, and unique game drives. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is the largest protected area in the world, covering around 50,000 square kilometers—larger than Switzerland and Denmark. This uninhabited and largely untouched wilderness provides visitors with a unique opportunity to experience pristine nature, far from crowded tourist routes.
